Including tips on how to take photos at the famous private beach in Positano

Even though the entire Amalfi Coast is Instagrammable, Positano is the most well-known and, in our opinion, the most beautiful town. The colorful hill-top houses, the perfectly aligned beach umbrellas and beautiful views from everywhere make it truly a magical town. We couldn’t stop looking for angles to take photos of all the beauty. In this blog, we’re sharing the most Insta-worthy photo spots in Positano, including practical tips on how and when to take photos at these places.

Main Beach

One of the best places to shoot Positano’s Instagrammable hill-top houses from is the main beach. However, the main beach is a private beach and usually not accessible without renting beach beds. Luckily, there are some ways to shoot at the beach nonetheless.

Early in the morning

Most of the private beach clubs open around 09:00, which makes it possible to shoot before they open. However, when we got there at 07:30, employees of the beach clubs were already setting up the beds and preparing for opening. We asked one of the guys if it was okay if we took some photos and he told us to be quick. It’s definitely possible to take photos early in the morning, but it isn’t our preferred time of the day.

Evening

The beach clubs close around 19:00, which is also when the sun has disappeared behind the cliffs. Depending on the time of the year, this might happen sooner or later in the day. Once the sun has disappeared behind the cliffs, all the people will leave too. There’s no point in sunbathing without the sun. This is the perfect time to shoot photos and the indirect light is perfect too! It’s truly magical to see the night fall on Positano and definitely our favorite time of the day in this iconic town. You have the freedom to try out different perspectives for your photos and even go for a swim in case the temperature is still good. We completely fell in love with Positano during this time of the day and it’s the most Instagrammable time in Positano if you ask us.

Don’t set up a tripod in the water, the waves are wild (even though it might not look like it). You can see the fear in our eyes, haha.

During the day

It’s also possible to rent beach beds at one of the beach clubs in order to stay at the beach the entire day to swim, sunbathe and take some photos in between, while enjoying the view of the iconic hill-top houses. Of course there will be people in your photos if you go for this option, but that doesn’t need to be a bad thing. If you want to take photos in the sun, this will be your only option as the sun will behind the cliffs in the early morning and evening. We chose another beach in Positano for our beach day (see below), but if we had the time to spend another day at the beach, we would definitely choose the main beach too. We didn’t ask the price of a beach bed, but be prepared to pay around €15-20 per person for one day. During the high season, it’s best to reserve beds at least one day in advance.

Promenade

The beach promenade (Via Marina Grande) is another great Insta-worthy photo spot to shoot the hill-top houses. Be aware that your only option to get good photos here will be in the morning. During the day and in the evening, the promenade is packed with people. Just walk between the beach and restaurants and look for a good spot.

Viewpoint

When walking up along the shopping streets in Positano, you’ll stumble upon an amazing viewpoint. There are multiple ways to take a photo here. The spot where most Instagram photos are taken is the little corner with house number tiles on the wall. When we were there, one of the shop owners was always sitting there on his own foldable chair. Luckily, there are lots of ways to get a photo of the amazing view without taking the same photo everyone is going for. Click here for the exact location of the viewpoint.

Arienzo Beach Club

For our beach day in Positano, we decided to book beds at Arienzo Beach Club. This beach club is located just outside of Positano and is way more secluded than the main beach. It’s also a perfect beach to take Instagram photos at, with the bright orange beds and umbrellas.

You can easily book through their website which we found very convenient. You can’t find any pricing information on their website, but when you make a reservation for a specific date you get an email with all the information you need. You have to reply to that email in order to confirm your reservation. We paid €20 per person for two beds and an umbrella. You have to have lunch at their restaurant and we had the best ravioli there!

Arienzo Beach Club offers a free boat shuttle from Positano’s main pier. Alternatively, you can climb down the 300 stairs to get to the beach. If you want to use the boat shuttle, you can just wait at the main pier in Positano. The shuttle leaves approximately every 30 minutes. You’ll immediately recognize the orange boat with white letters saying Arienzo. The boat shuttle service was one of the reasons for us to go to this beach club.

One piece of advice if you’re going to the beach anywhere on the Amalfi Coast: bring flip flops! Most of the beaches have dark-colored pebbles, which get very hot during the day. We forgot to bring flip flops and our feet got burnt within seconds. Everytime we wanted to go for a swim, we had to put on our sneakers because walking bare feet was impossible. You can imagine the struggle it was getting those sneakers on with wet feet…

We hope we’ve inspired you to visit this stunning town on the Amalfi Coast. We completely fell in love with this place and would love to return someday. Have you been to Positano or is it on your travel bucket list? Let us know in the comments below!
